Or Nue - Shaded Gold Work
Or Nue, also called shaded goldwork, is a form of embroidery where the couching stitches are used to create a design or pattern over the gold. There are several ecclastical examples of this style, often depicting people or scenes. In the picture of my completed project, I fashioned the dragon using several layers of wool felt to make the dragon three dimensional and then used Or Nue to create the finished project. I used a gilt gold thread with real metal (bends better and tighter at corners when needed) and silk thread to couch the gold threads. I also used a small garnet for the eye of the dragon. The guantlets and stars were done in silk threads using a split stitch. The base fabric for the gauntlets is a worsted blue wool and for the stars I used linen. Trim with real metal threads were also used for accenting the oak dags and grounding the embroidered designs. This continues on larapipe. The owl is my signature. The hood is a fine worsted red wool lined in a crosswoven silk of bronze and silver.
